POSITION SUMMARYTherapeutic extension of Tarian Security Services.
The Mental Health Worker/Behavioral Security Technician (BeST) monitors patients that are deemed by hospital staff to be a danger to themselves or others, may be a fall risk, or are confused.
BeST ensures the safety for those patients as well as for those in proximity.
BeST also cares for people with mental health issues, substance abuse, poverty and other social problems.
Our technicians assist the nursing staff by monitoring patients, providing therapeutic assistance.
Compensation:
$22.
66/hr Responsibilities Monitors patient activity and ensures safety.
Maintains a direct line of sight with patient at all times, never leaving patient alone under any circumstances.
Utilizing 'hands-on to prevent patient from pulling out medical lines or other equipment or from falling.
Immediately reports dangerous patient behavior to the appropriate supervisor.
Monitors environment and ensures it is safe for patient and reports potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
Uses calming techniques to assist the patient or client in situations that might escalate to a problematic status.
Verbally intervenes during crisis.
This includes the functional ability to quickly grasp various situations, develop rapport with emotionally disturbed people, and understand when people are or are not processing information, and be supportive or directive as needed.
Ability to physically intervene during crises.
This includes the functional ability to physically restrain people, requiring retention of trained knowledge under stress as well as the ability to meet significant physical demands including those of a struggle with someone physically larger and heavier, while making all possible efforts not to inflict injury.
It includes the ability to continue to request or direct compliance from people while they are being restrained.
Writes accurate, clear, and legible reports.
Assists medical staff with areas of patient care such as helping the patient walk if the patient has an unsteady gate, with an emphasis on monitoring the mental well-being of the patient.
Places meal orders and answers patient's telephone if patient is unable to do so.
Advocates for patient as appropriate.
Interacts with patient on a one-to-one basis as their contact person.
Works and interacts with patients (and their family/friends), medical personnel, visitors, other employees, and clients.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned Qualifications Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Sociology or related field or one year appropriate experience with the mentally ill population.
Will consider candidates who are currently enrolled in Psychology, Counseling, and Sociology programs.
Current, valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/BLS) Certification Ability to complete all training and pass all competency tasks in the allotted time period to include, but not limited to, TEAM training, Tarian and client new employee orientation and security procedures and policies Minimum of one-year experience working directly with the mentally ill and/or substance addicted population Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to establish patient rapport Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply appropriate written guidelines, precedents, and standardized work practices to a variety of problematic situations.
Ability to use sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
Ability to 'stand-by' for an entire shift a week, and be ready to arrive at the scheduled facility within an hour SKILLS De-escalation communication skills Knowledge of aggressive behaviors Knowledge of different types of mental health disorders Dementia training Basic knowledge of suicide watch (M-1 holds) Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills Ability to treat patients with dignity and empathy Strong listening and communication skills Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills Compassionate and very patient PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS While performing the duties of this position, individual may be required to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time in a hospital or psychiatric care environment.
